Support From Like-Minded People Can Keep You Motivated

By: Yvonne A Jones Category: Business - Entrepreneur, Business - Home-Based Business, Direct Sales, Uncategorized

I was recently asked what methods  I used to keep myself motivated in my business.  It should have been an easy answer because even while working in the corporate world, I had a successful skin care business while working with a number of women to build their own business.  Later I had a Customer Service home-based business for two years where I had to schedule my own hours, and have now been working in my online business for over one year.  The answer did not come very easy though, because there were times I did not feel motivated and there were times when I wanted to give in and give up.

After thinking about it a while I realized that there has been a common thread through all my experiences: support from like-minded people.  When I did not feel like making those three customer calls per day, or leaving my home to do a Beauty Show or call my team members, all of which were important aspects of my direct sales business, I would call a peer who was managing her business successfully or my Sales Director, or even listen to a motivational tape or CD.  Those conversations served to energize me and help me get my thinking back on track.

Moving forward to my online business, there were times when it felt like I was moving further away from my goals rather than moving towards them especially since no one in my direct circle was involved in an online business.  However, relationships that were built during online classes allowed me to stay in contact with some Mentors and classmates as we have communicated with each other through Skype, e-mail and the telephone.

Interestingly, over the past month through the first 30-day challenge I’ve met and am coming to know some incredibly supportive  people, and this has continued through to the current 30-day June challenge and is expanding.

My recommendation as one way to keep yourself motivated is to find and connect with like-minded people.  These will sometimes be networking groups in your community, or if yours is an online business, in online groups as well.  People want to be able to relate to others and have a natural sense of wanting to be part of ‘something.’  When you find people that you share common interests and goals with, this can go a far way to help you keep yourself motivated in whatever you do.

How do you keep yourself motivated in your online business?

  1. Wow – great minds think alike. I just did a post on the need for a Master Mind group. I fully agree that we need to find people that support us.

  2. I went over and read your post, Sue, and I thought this is what is at the root of Masterminds. People who think alike in a positive way 🙂 Collaboration or just bouncing off ideas with someone else or a group is wonderful because many of us have doubts that could paralyze us from moving forward and since change is constant we have to be always moving along with the changes. Thanks for visiting and commenting.

    Hey Yvonne ~

Please allow me to jump on the mastermind bandwagon with you and Sue here!

Making connections and staying in touch with online friends and colleagues is wonderful. Responding to updates on Twitter and Facebook and adding a splash of your own personality by responding to those updates is wonderful. Creating good high-quality content on your blog and replying to comments is wonderful. Asking and answering questions on groups or forums is wonderful. There are so many ways to meet like-minded individuals online but …

Nothing tops a mastermind for a continual and welcomed dose of motivational support, accountability, and fresh new ideas for moving your business forward!

I’m glad I have great support from my family and friends… and all my new online friends such as yourself that I’ve connected with during this #Blog30 challenge. 🙂

  5. Melanie, Well said. That is fantastic! We have the beginning of a Mastermind group ready to go. Any suggestions on the easiest way to contact each other directly? Telephone or skype seem to be a popular method. Or you may send me your thoughts directly to jones.yvonnea@gmail.com. WooHoo, I’m excited! 🙂

  6. Thank you, Henry. It’s good to know you have family support as so many of us do not. In my case my family supports the fact that I’m doing business online, but it’s like Greek to them as far as procedures and concepts. They will proof-read my work if I ask though:)

  8. Hi Mike,
It’s true that some of our support may be in the form of books, etc. and it means that we have to take action to garner that support to re-energize us to move ahead. It’s so worth it, isn’t it? Thank for adding your thoughtful observation.

  9. Hi Yvonne – what a great post, and what fantastic advice. It’s true – like you, when I need a boost of “mo-jo”, I immediately call on a like-minded friend. To be honest, I don’t think I’d have been in business these last 6 years if it weren’t for the support of like-minded people who either helped me see the forest through the trees, brainstormed ideas, cheered me on, held me accountable, or ALL of those things. It’s people like you who keep inspiration flowing – thank you for doing and sharing, Yvonne!
