Setting Personal Goals Key to Success in Life and Business

February 22, 2011 By: Yvonne A Jones Category: Business - Entrepreneur

Every few months I re-visit the topic of goal-setting.  I've found that to a large extent the measure of success that I experience in my life and business is closely connected to the goals I set and work towards, as well as the effort made to achieve those goals.

How about you?  Do you set realistic goals in various aspects of your life, or do you dream about what you'd like to achieve and make decisions on a day-to-day basis?

Areas of Life to Apply Goal-Setting

  • Spirituality – Grow in your level of spirituality
  • Relationships – Develop healthy relationships with others:  family, co-workers, business, etc.
  • Work – Become more focused on your business while keeping work in its proper place
  • Friendships – Become a better friend, and build more genuine friendships
  • Personal health and fitness – Evaluate where you are and where you need to be in order to enjoy optimal health to the extent you can control.

These are all areas of life in which each one of us can set realistic goals.  However, this series will focus on Goal-Setting for Entrepreneurs.

Goal Setting for Entrepreneurs

Whether you are a Solopreneur who works from home, an entrepreneur who has a home-based office but works mostly away from home, or you have a brick and mortar office or store, all of us are affected by how well we implement the goal-setting process.

In my next post we'll discuss some personal benefits you can gain from setting goals.

  1. Ohhh yes! I talk about goal setting a lot myself too! Its the key to getting things done for me. I set goals then reward myself once completing them, which keeps me motivated. It also helps me keep organized and not be a last minute Larry!

    Good post Yvonne! 🙂

    Yvonne,

Hopefully we all revisit the topic of goal setting.

Looking forward to reading about the personal benefits.

  3. Phil, you mentioned something I haven’t done in a while. Thanks for the reminder that we should reward ourselves when we achieve our goals. You’re doing a wonderful thing. It’s so easy to say good job! to someone else and we may not have anyone to say that to us when we work from home…so we need to do it for ourselves. Appreciate your stopping by and sharing a great reminder.

  4. Earl Nightingale said it well, Sheila and that’s a mantra we as business owners must adopt to be successful. I’ll see you on the next post 🙂

Great post. Everyone- and every enterprise- needs a vision, a mission to set the course to reach the vision- and goals to make everything happen.
At least quarterly reviews should be done.

I like that you said you “re-visit” goal-setting often, Yvonne. You’re very smart to do that because, as you know, entrepreneurs are constantly going through lots of changes and our goals have to be set (and hopefully met!) accordingly.

Looking forward to your series — I know it’s going to be GREAT!

  7. These are the areas in which I set goals! And set goals…and set goals….lol!! 🙂 I think sometimes I set realistic goals and sometimes I don’t. I am constantly revamping my goals, but boy does it feel good to achieve them!

  8. A vision with goals is truly a requirement for all businesses. I like that you say, “At least quarterly” because everything is changing so quickly that in order to keep up and stay in step, we cannot ‘set them and leave them.’ We have to do periodic evaluations and revisions where necessary. Thank you for stopping by and sharing those points on the topic.

  9. Ah, yes, Melanie. It seems that we’re experiencing changes more frequently these days – changes in our business and changes that affect us personally and we have to be the ones to make the adjustments. We don’t have a Board to do it for us. Since failure is not an option we must revisit our goals periodically 🙂

  10. You’re way ahead of those who fail to set a goal, Jennifer, even if you don’t always reach them in your original timeframe. Yes, it does feel good to achieve goals and do you reward yourself when you do? Phil, who commented earlier, reminded us of the need to reward ourselves when we achieve a goal and I’m going to keep that in mind as I haven’t done that in a long time 🙂

  11. I think setting goals is the key to making your dreams come true. You can have anything you want, but you can’t have everything you want. Goals help you set priorities and stay focused on what is really important.
    Thanks for a great post!

  12. Your comment summed up two very important reasons why it’s important to set goals – they help us to set priorities and stay focused. As entrepreneurs we NEED that because it’s so easy to become attracted to all the ‘shiny objects’ that are within easy reach. Thank you, Janette.

  13. Absolutely important to know which direction you are headed and track how you will get there with goals, mission statement and vision statement. I am a big fan of revisitng the plan often and taking notes on what worked and what does not.

  14. I am sorry that I messed up my own name in the comment above! Perhaps my goal should be to proof before I hit the submit buttons on blog comments!

  15. LOL. I read your other comment. I’ve been know to do that a few times as well 🙂 Love that you’re a fan of revisiting your goals; it just makes sense because everything is changing around us so rapidly, we have to do a re-evaluation as well so that as entrepreneurs we can keep in step with current happenings. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
